About this test
The quote typing test asks you to type a complete passage exactly, finishing when the last character matches. Real sentences behave differently from a stream of random words: capital letters, punctuation, and natural phrasing all come into play, so quote mode is excellent practice for the kind of writing you actually do. Every passage on this site is written originally for typing practice, so there are no copyright worries and no jarring fragments pulled out of context. Choose short for a quick, confidence-building run or expert for long, complex sentences that stretch your punctuation and stamina. Because you must match the text precisely, quote mode gently pushes you toward accuracy — a rushed guess that breaks the sentence costs you more time than typing it right the first time.

Do I have to match punctuation exactly?
Yes — quote mode completes only when your text matches the passage character for character, including capitals and punctuation.
How is WPM calculated?
One word is defined as five characters. Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes; Net WPM uses only correctly typed characters. See our methodology page for details.
