About this test

The 1 minute typing test is the standard most people mean when they talk about their WPM. Sixty seconds is long enough to average out lucky and unlucky moments, so the result is stable and easy to compare with friends, job requirements, or your own past attempts. During the minute you'll see your speed rise and settle as your fingers find a rhythm; the final Net WPM reflects only the characters you typed correctly, while Raw WPM shows your unfiltered pace. Aim for accuracy first — most typists gain more speed by making fewer mistakes than by moving their fingers faster. When a minute feels comfortable, try the 3 or 5 minute tests to measure how well your speed holds up over time.

How is WPM calculated?

One word is defined as five characters. Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes; Net WPM uses only correctly typed characters. See our methodology page for details.

Is 60 seconds long enough for an accurate score?

Yes. A minute or more averages out lucky and unlucky moments and gives a stable, comparable result.

Does accuracy affect my WPM?

Your headline WPM is the Net WPM, which counts only correctly typed characters, so mistakes lower it. Raw WPM ignores accuracy.

Is my typing sent anywhere?
