How it works

The typing speed calculator lets you work out WPM and accuracy from figures you already have — handy for checking another test's result, grading a timed exercise, or just understanding the math. Enter the characters you typed, how many were correct, the number of errors, and the time taken, and the calculator returns Gross WPM, Net WPM, accuracy, and characters per minute using the same formulas as our tests. Because a word is defined as five characters, the results are directly comparable with standard typing scores. Each formula is shown alongside a worked example, so this doubles as a quick lesson in how typing speed is actually measured and why Gross and Net WPM can differ so much when accuracy is low.

The formulas

  • Gross WPM = typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
  • Net WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
  • Accuracy = correct ÷ (correct + errors) × 100
  • CPM = typed characters ÷ minutes

Worked example

Suppose you type 300 characters in 60 seconds (1 minute), of which 285 are correct and 15 are errors. Gross WPM = 300 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 60. Net WPM = 285 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 57. Accuracy = 285 ÷ 300 × 100 = 95%.

Second example

Type 150 characters in 30 seconds with 150 correct and no errors: Gross and Net WPM are both 150 ÷ 5 ÷ 0.5 = 60, and accuracy is 100%.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

One word is defined as five characters. Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes; Net WPM uses only correctly typed characters. See our methodology page for details.

What's the difference between Gross and Net WPM?

Gross WPM counts every character you typed; Net WPM counts only correct characters, so it drops as accuracy falls.

Why five characters per word?

It's the international standard word length, which makes scores comparable across tests and languages that use spaces.

Is my typing sent anywhere?
